Novel Essays coming here shortly.
The novel examination topics will be almost the same as those for film, except that you will not be writing about techniques. Topics will ALWAYS be 'Describe' and 'Explain'. You will need to Describe one of the following:
  • a character
  • a relationship
  • a turning point
  • a setting
  • an event or experience
  • an idea (note that with an idea you may not need a separate 'describe' paragraph. You can describe the idea as you complete the 'explain' paragraph.

If you go to the 'Studyit' link on the home page you can look up old exam topics.

Novel Essay Exemplars:

Below are some exemplars. Both are Merits.

Hints for Essay Writing

  1. Underline Key words
  2. PLAN
  3. Structure:
  • Introduction (Follow TAKO - Title, Author, Key Words, Overview)
  • Describe paragraph: For topics about character, relationship, setting or event.
  • Explain: First point for the 'Explain' part of the topic. Try to follow SEET - use specific examples and a quote where possible.
  • Explain: Second point for the 'Explain' part of the topic. Try to follow SEET - use specific examples and a quote where possible.
  • Explain: (extra for those seeing Merit and Excellence). Try to follow SEET - use specific examples and a quote where possible.
  • Conclusion; Brief summing up. Only 1.2 sentences following TAKO.
NB: When writing on a topic about an IDEA/THEME you will not need to write a describe paragraph. You will automatically be describing within the explain paragraph when you TELL (the 'T' in SEET) what your example is revealing about the idea.
